3rd Shift Treatment Plant Operator / Laborer

The Treatment Plant receives between 3 and 28 Million Gallons of wastewater (sewage) per day from Galesburg and East Galesburg.  The wastewater is treated and returned to the environment.  The Plant is staffed around the clock every day of the year due to the Plant’s size, age and lack of automated processes.

Newly hired Operator/Laborers are generally hired to fill 2nd or 3rd shift vacancies with days off during the week.

Operator/Laborers are also scheduled to work on holidays.

 

Brief job description

The Operator/Laborer position is split into two categories – Operator and Laborer.  Every employee is trained as both.

The Operator monitors the daily performance of the treatment plant and all its equipment.  Some of the tasks include manually operating valves, running various pumps, identifying normal and abnormal conditions, visually observing plant processes, making inspections and recording plant data, assisting Plant Superintendent and Maintenance staff, recommending and implementing plant improvements for optimization of treatment.

The Laborer performs facility maintenance which may include mowing, plowing, painting, cleaning, process maintenance, hauling, tree cutting, operating heavy equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift; holidays and weekends are required
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Valid Driver’s license required, ability to obtain a Class C non-CDL license upon hire
  • Experience using hand and power tools
  • Experience operating equipment such as skid loaders and tractors
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Physical demands include walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders and lifting 50 lbs.
  • IEPA wastewater certification is highly desired.  Ability to obtain Class 3 wastewater certification is required within 2 years of employment.
